Garden Centre Love

What is it about garden centres that British folk love so much? (notice the British spelling) Whatever the time of day or year - these places are hopping.  Seasonal decorations, clothing, plants, flowers, shrubbery and pet supplies are commonly sold.

Dobbies and Klondyke are national chains that offer a consistently good product. The national chains offer frequent shopper bonuses, special discounts for senior citizens and monthly promotions. There are also independent garden centers that offer a more limited selection of non-gardening supplies.

All demographic groups patronize these centers.  OAP's (old age pensioners), stay at home moms, teenagers, professionals on their lunch break - you name it and you will see them at a garden center.

Why?

The biggest draw to these retail outlets is the cafes.  Hot drinks, sandwiches, jacket potato (baked potatoes) and cakes.  Lots and lots of cakes.  Scones, meringues, cheesecakes, brownies, a variety like one never sees in the US.  Be on the lookout for my personal favorite, Millionaires Shortbread.   Buttery shortbread covered in soft caramel topped off with a layer of chocolate.   Yum!

All of these cafes are cafeteria style, meaning that you slide your tray along and make selections as you go.  If you want brewed coffee there are machines.  If you want a latte or a cappuccino, there will be a barista to make your drink.  You pay for your food at the end.

Be forewarned - sometimes the line gets long!
